Design History: Chairs and Baskets

Discover how the history of the Orkney chair and contemporary basket making are connected

This session brings together design historian David Jones to reveal the history of the Orkney chair, one of Scotland’s most iconic pieces of vernacular furniture and Lois Walpole, a designer living in the Shetland Islands, to discuss her practice of contemporary basket making.

With a different focus each time, this monthly event explores Scotland’s rich design history. The series will look at historic examples of design, as well as how history influences contemporary designers. Most sessions feature two speakers making fascinating connections between the past and present.

Curated by Polly Duplock (Senior Lecturer, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design) and David Jones (Design Historian).
