Discover the art of Peter Travis AM, gay designer and ceramicist. Travis was the first Australian artist to have work purchased by the V&A, and his brightly coloured giant kites, dubbed “aerial sculptures”, once hung proudly in the museum. Also a respected designer, Travis is probably best remembered for his revolutionary design for Speedo in 1961: his swimming briefs which became an Australian icon, nicknamed the budgie smuggler. Join Dan Vo, coordinator of the award-winning volunteer-led LGBTQ Tours at the V&A, as he pays tribute to an inspirational man and a beloved teacher of art and design.
