Course Overview

Framed by the V&A’s landmark exhibition Fashioning Masculinities and referencing the Museum’s diverse collection of men’s clothing and dress accessories, this course will unpick the social and political threads that hold the male wardrobe together, considering changing attitudes across different cultures and ages, and into the future.

Thematic lectures that focus on suiting, shoes, gemstones, and short shorts will consider how and why attitudes to men’s dress have changed between the Middle Ages and modernity.

Unravelling the complex relationship that men from around the world have with their clothing and appearance, the course will place current menswear trends and debates about masculinities in their social context and explore future possibilities within the menswear industry.
