From Peter the Great to Stalin, discover the world of Russian art during a period of social and political upheaval. This course will explore how leading painters such as Ilya Repin, Natalia Goncharova and Kazimir Malevich sought to shape society through their work.

Dr Kathy McLauchlan

Course Director Dr Kathy McLauchlan

Dr Kathy McLauchlan is an art historian specialising in French painting and the academic tradition. She completed an MA in 19th century painting and a PhD on the work of art students at the French Academy in Rome at the Courtauld Institute, University of London. Kathy has worked the Open University, Birkbeck College, NADFAS and Morley College.

Course Overview

Gain new insights into the character of Russian art and consider the interaction between Russian and European art traditions. You will consider the work of some of Russia’s leading painters, including Ilya Repin, Wassily Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova, Kazimir Malevich and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, and learn how Russia’s painters saw themselves as active protagonists in the shaping of their society, whether by confronting the worst aspects of current reality or by presenting idealised visions of a better world to come.


Course tickets will be available for priority booking for V&A Members from 9.30am Monday 6 May 2019. General booking will open on 9.30am Monday 13 May 2019, subject to availability.

This course has a Half Term break on 26 May • Refreshments served • Price reductions available for Seniors (60+), jobseekers (ES40 holders) and registered disabled people
