Course Overview

This course will explore the thread of poeticism, as well as many other aspects of German art and design, which runs through architecture, sculpture, paintings and design from the early Middle Ages to German reunification in the late 20th century. In limewood sculpture from the 15th century, in the rococo fantasies of Munich’s Nymphenburg Palace, in the imagined drawing rooms of Menzel and the strange, bucolic world of Meissen that poetic quality emerges always, contributing to the notion in the early 19th century that the German people were the most civilised in Europe. We will also consider how that poetic dream ended in the madness of Nazism and the brutal division of German post-war.
