As a course, it is brilliant. The coverage of topics, the variety of speakers from their various backgrounds, the quality of the lecturers and the presentations. Previous Course Student

Course Overview

This course will explore the thread of poeticism, as well as many other aspects of German art and design, which runs through architecture, sculpture, paintings and design from the early Middle Ages to German reunification in the late 20th century. In limewood sculpture from the 15th century, in the rococo fantasies of Munich’s Nymphenburg Palace, in the imagined drawing rooms of Menzel and the strange, bucolic world of Meissen that poetic quality emerges always, contributing to the notion in the early 19th century that the German people were the most civilised in Europe. We will also consider how that poetic dream ended in the madness of Nazism and the brutal division of German post-war.

Course tickets will be available for priority booking for V&A Members from 9.30am Monday 6 May 2019. General booking will open on 9.30am Monday 13 May 2019, subject to availability.

• This course has a Half Term break on 27 May • Refreshments served • Price reductions available for Seniors (60+), jobseekers (ES40 holders) and registered disabled people
