Course Overview

Learn how paintings were made between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, and find out how experimentation with techniques and materials drove innovation in style and meaning.

The methods artists use to create their work have an enduring fascination. This course tracks developments in painting through a series of case studies, each of which connects changes in techniques with stylistic innovation – whether those changes be deliberate or accidental. Expert lecturers bring to life the world of art in the making, including pastel painting during the eighteenth-century, Constable’s oil sketches, experiments with watercolour, technique, pigments and frames in Impressionist art, Cubist collages and the Surrealists’ use of automatism.
