Once occupying a peripheral place within western art, America by the early 20th century had emerged as one of the most dynamic and forward-looking centres for art, with its painters claiming leading roles within Europe’s avant-garde.

Dr Kathy McLauchlan

Course Leader Dr Kathy McLauchlan

Dr Kathy McLauchlan is an art historian specialising in French painting and the academic tradition. She completed an MA in 19th century painting and a PhD on the work of art students at the French Academy in Rome at the Courtauld Institute, University of London. Kathy has worked the Open University, Birkbeck College, NADFAS and Morley College.

The lectures on Kathy's courses are fabulous. Her enthusiasm, the social and historical contexts given, and the lavish illustrations. 2017/18 Year Course Student

Course Overview

Gain new insights into the character of North American art, and consider the interaction between American and European painters during a period of rapid change and innovation. This course concentrates on those who led the American school between the eras of Neoclassicism and Minimalism, with sessions focussed on masters including Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, George Bellows, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
