Course Director Jennifer Wearden

Jennifer Wearden was Senior Curator of Textiles in the Department of Furniture, Textiles & Fashion until the beginning of 2005. After 28 years working with the textile collection in the V&A she has devised and run highly successful courses on textiles and dress for the Museum, and has co-authored several popular V&A books.

Term 1

12 weeks, 26 September – 12 December 2019

Power Dressing

This term explores some basic concepts such as colour, cut and the purpose of clothing and then its main focus is on court dress and the dress of the nobility in the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries.

Term 2

12 weeks, 9 January – 26 March 2020

The Wider World

The focus is widened in this term to look at the dress of more ordinary people in Europe and at the dress of people in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Fashion was becoming global and more readily available. The period covered is the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Term 3

12 weeks, 23 April – 9 July 2020

The Modern World

Beginning with the later 19th century, this term looks at the ways technology, transport, social revolution and warfare have influenced fashion and dress and it follows developments through to the late 20th century.
