International training courses

The V&A runs a series of week-long intensive courses that offer unique training opportunities for museum professionals from overseas to work with V&A colleagues and peers on specific aspects of museum practice.

The courses are led by V&A experts and include both talks and hands-on workshops. Participants will be invited to share examples of projects from their institutions that they could develop during and after the course.

APPLY NOW: The Enterprising Museum
27 – 31 March 2017
Course Fee: £1,160 (excl. VAT)

All cultural organisations are increasingly being required to generate income and pay their way but how do museums, galleries, arts venues and heritage sites learn how to identify and monetise their assets? This course is aimed at anyone working in one of these industries who is seeking to improve and expand their knowledge of commerce and enterprise. Led by specialist staff from the V&A, it considers a selection of core topics - such as how to create products, set up shop, members’ organisations, ticketed programmes, and catering and events - that will complement and support the visitor experience, whilst also generating income.

Included in the course will be in-depth presentations on retailing, licencing, publications, venue hire, online engagement and catering, combined with case studies, individual surgeries, and group feedback. The course ends with a half-day Q and A with the V&A’s external partners so that students can explore the landscape from a commercial perspective.

All the teaching is delivered by experts from the V&A and includes both talks and hands-on workshops to suit different styles of learning. Participants will also be invited to share real examples of projects from their institutions that they could develop during and after the course.

Applications for the March 2017 edition of The Enterprising Museum are now open. Please email a completed application form to InternationalTraining@vam.ac.uk by Friday 10 February.
