Buzz Lightyear was one of the key characters in the successful Disney film of 1995, Toy Story. He was an astronaut who landed in a boy’s bedroom and came to life. The film tells of the rivalry between the space toy Buzz and the cowboy Woody.
Toy shops were battle grounds when Buzz Lightyear was launched in the run up to Christmas 1996. Supply couldn’t keep up with demand, and many children faced a disappointing Christmas without their favourite character toy. Toy manufacturers thought that it would be the cowboy doll Woody who would be the best seller, and were caught out when Buzz became the surprise hit.
Toy Story was the first full-length, computer-animated film ever made and grossed over $350 million at the box office. Famous actors voiced the characters, with Tim Allen playing the part of Buzz. Toy Story set the standard for animated films such as A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc and in 1997, Toy Story 2.
