Robert Freidus was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941. Having managed galleries in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, he developed an interest in photography and sculpture. His book, Italian Memorial Sculpture 1820-1940, A Legacy of Love, was published in 2004.

Freidus has been collecting paper models since the mid 1980s and has so far amassed over 14,000 examples. They come from over 40 countries and include examples from all the major publishers of the last 150 years.

The breadth of his collection is extraordinary. It includes everything from simple slot-together models to complicated buildings that take months to complete. Every type of model is represented, from single sheets to boxed sets, from pop-ups to puzzles, and from the play world of children to internet downloads and serious works created by and for architects.

The entire collection is held at the V&A Museum of Childhood. If you would like to know more about the collection, or if you would like to make an appointment to see anything not on display, email moccollections@vam.ac.uk
