Drawing on work from Thane and Kutch in Western India, Warli and Weave presented a special insight into two areas of contemporary Indian craft practice – Warli painting and weave. Each exemplifies the enduring qualities of traditional crafts whilst also showing how contemporary practice has developed in response to changes in family and community life, together with shifts in local markets and global economics.

As its starting point, Warli and Weave drew on the personal stories of two nationally recognised craftspeople, Ramesh Hengadi and Dayal Vankar.

This exhibition was an introduction to a programme of exchange residencies at the Museum for craftspeople from India and Bangladesh, which took place in 2010.w290
