McQueen’s notes show many examples of crisp floral decoration done in wood marquetry but here another technique is used: carving to create the low relief forms. The carving here is what’s called in the solid, where the detail is cut directly into the wood and that helps create the organic fusion between the very feminine high heel and delicate ankle, and the hairy animal foot, perhaps that of a satyr, the mischievous, lustful half man half goat creatures that followed Bacchus, ancient Greek God of wine.
