Design for the scene the depths of the sea in Dick Whittington and His Cat, by Cynthia Tingey. Hand-painted drawing. London, England. This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum, V&A, by the designer. Cynthia Tingey created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes and this design was made for the 22 December 1980 production at the London Palladium directed by Lionel Blair.

Finished and framed by hand in Sussex by skilled craftsmen using responsibly sourced solid wood mouldings. The finished product has a taped back and is supplied ready to hang.

About the artist

Cynthia Tingey

Cynthia Tingey (1931-2005) was a prolific costume designer who was trained at the Regent Street Polytechnic. She has worked as a house designer for theatrical costumiers Bermans, for West End productions, department stores and films. She became best known for pantomine designs for shows ranging from those at the London Palladium to the seaside specials at Blackpool and Great Yarmouth. Cynthia Tingey gave the V&A the collection of her work for pantomime and cabaret.
