Details
One of the best-loved objects in the museum, Tippoo’s tiger is a life-sized wooden sculpture of a tiger mauling a European man, with an organ concealed within the tiger’s chest. When the handle is turned, the man’s arm lifts up and down, signalling his distress, and the organ can be played in imitation of his screams of agony. Brought to the UK following the fall of Seringapatam in 1799, Tippoo’s Tiger has come to represent the fascinating eclecticism of the V&A’s collection, and can now be worn on this quirky, stylised enamel badge.
