About the artist
Nicolas de Larmessin II
Nicolas de Larmessin II was a seventeenth-century engraver. The son of a bookseller, he hailed from an artistic family and may have been employed by his older brother and sister-in-law. Throughout his career, de Larmessin II conceived numerous “grotesque costumes,” possibly made at the behest of French engraver, Francois Jollain. These engravings, which are held in the V&A, run the gamut of seventeenth-century professions with each profession receiving a surrealist makeover.
