Mythical Beasts cup and saucer by Richard Brendon

Richard Brendon has selected four of his favourite patterns from the museum’s vast archives to re-imagine with playful and whimsical twists. Inspired by the rare and highly decorative designs of Thomas Rose Coalport and Miles Mason, the Mythical Beasts design on this bone china cup and saucer reimagines their unusual designs against a surreal, eastern-influenced background. At first glance, the beastly dragons may appear ferocious, but on closer inspection it becomes clear they're rather friendly, drawing on the East Asian symbolism that sees dragons as bringers of good fortune. When the reflective cup is placed onto the patterned antique saucer, it perfectly mirrors the design below, making it appear as though the pair have always belonged together. 

 

Bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary design, Richard Brendon design and produce distinctive yet functional bone china with a recognisable flair. Each piece is made by master craftspeople in the potteries of Stoke-on-Trent, benefiting from the town’s generations of knowledge and experience while supporting heritage British industry.
