V&A Select is a new collection of artist prints commissioned by the V&A. Each print is available in an edition of just 75. The artists were chosen for the way their work connects with the V&A and creates the opportunity for a new dialogue with the collection.
Freya Pocklington created this print, packed with decorative and historical detail, following a deep dive into the museum’s online archive with the intention of celebrating women makers. The exuberant party set in the Gamble Room brings together a diverse group of artists, designers and creators, including Mary Queen of Scots, Josephine Baker, May Morris and Althea McNish. The objects on display in the lively scene are in fact from the museum’s collection: photographs by Maud Sulter, ceramics by Lucie Rie, drawings by Beatrix Potter and textiles by Lucienne Day. The title of the piece is taken from a 1936 letter from May Morris to George Bernard Shaw, expressing something universal in this context about the remarkable makers included in the artwork.
Lancashire-born artist Freya Pocklington currently lives and works in Hertfordshire. She is studying for a PhD at the Royal College of Art, examining the role of fine art portraiture within narrative medicine. Her artwork, including pieces held in the V&A collection, often focusses on the juxtaposition of news stories and magazine articles, creating new narratives and exploring how stories alter over time. Specially commissioned by the V&A, this reproduction of the original ink and pastel artwork is the artist’s first limited edition print.
Created exclusively for the V&A.
