  • Lunchtime Lecture: Contemporary Design Objects in the Museum: Two Perspectives

Lunchtime Lecture: Contemporary Design Objects in the Museum: Two Perspectives

    Wednesday 26 April 2017 13.00 - 13.45

Where : The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre

FAMILY EVENT: This lecture will examine the exhibition of 20th century design. Circulation, or ‘Circ’ was responsible for many of the Museum’s acquisitions of post-war contemporary design. Joanna Weddell will discuss Circ’s role as a ‘museum within a museum’ through shows such as Design Review, 1975. The Boilerhouse Gallery was a temporary intervention at the Museum funded and run by the Conran Foundation, as Liz Farrelly will explain. Between 1981 and 1986 the Gallery increased the visibility of contemporary design through thematic exhibitions that boosted visitor figures and grabbed headlines, later morphing into the Design Museum at Shad Thames. With the new Design Museum opening in Kensington High Street, and a revival of Circ announced, this lecture is a timely review of the display of contemporary design at the V&A.A

Lunchtime Lecture: The History of Fashion Journalism

    Wednesday 24 May 2017 13.00 - 13.45

Where : The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre

FAMILY EVENT: In 2004 contemporary art scholar Rafal Niemojewski noted the advent of a new type of fashion publication: ‘They cannot be defined as fashion magazines, strictly speaking […] With their avant-garde positioning, they take a fresh look at fashion, placing it in an interactive relationship with the plastic arts, music, the cinema and the “celeb” world’ (2004: 180).  In fact, the hybrid magazine has a long history, indeed the first fashion magazines placed fashion firmly in the context of the broader arts. In this talk, Kate Nelson Best will cover various historical incarnations of the hybrid including La ModeLa Gazette du Bon TonFlairInterviewDazed and Confused and Visionnaire and will argue that this type of magazine appears when fashion finds itself at the nexus of shifting artistic movements and equally at times of cultural dislocation.
