2015-2016 YEAR COURSE: Explore the art, architecture and decorative arts of East Asia, focussing on the ancient civilizations of China, Korea and Japan. Trace cultural connections across the region from Neolithic tomb goods to sophisticated court paraphernalia of the late imperial era.
As the dominant cultural and political force, discover the impact of China upon its closest regional neighbours through philosophy, religion and belief. From the earliest dynasties, private and state patronage stimulated technological and artistic innovations which produced arguably the finest ceramics, textiles, bronze and jade ever seen. Paintings, manuscripts, books and prints will also be examined; the role of artist, collector and connoisseur. Finally, discover the cultural characteristics and singularity which have come to define the arts of each region in turn, and in later years the multiple responses to direct contact with Europe.
