Arts Council of Great Britain: records, 1928-1997

Series description

Series title: Policy and Planning Unit: Women in Arts Files, 1982-1995
Reference: ACGB/104
Extent: 87 items

Context

In 1990 Alexandra Ankrah, then Assistant Planning Officer, embarked upon a Women in Arts project. The project was initiated by the Planning Department. It was felt that the Arts Council had accepted cultural diversity and disability as access issues, but had failed to act upon gender as an issue of access in the same way.

Between 1990 and 1993 the project researched the position of women in the arts and at the end of which, the Arts Council adopted a Women in Arts action plan. This included specific targets for the Council to meet over the following two years and the Women in Arts Unit was established.

In 1995 Marjorie James took over from Alexandra Ankrah as Head of Women in Arts. Organisational changes at the end of March meant that the Women in Arts Unit, which had been situated in the Policy, Research and Planning Department, was closed down and the work of the Unit was integrated into relevant Arts Council departments.

Related files can be found in a number of other series where cross-departmental initiatives involved the issue of women in the arts. Some files can be found in series ACGB/112 where the records of the Unit were passed into the custody of the Policy and Planning Department in 1995.

Scope and content

The series consists of the records brought together during the Arts Council's Women in Arts initiative. In the first place there are files relating to the day to day running of the initial project and the subsequent Unit. Secondly there are files relating to the Unit's involvement in various initiatives, such as Opportunity 2000 and the Women in Arts International Database. There are also a number of reports from conferences, symposiums and the regions. Finally, there are copies of publications collected by the Unit such as Sparerib, Artrage, Women of Europe and Feminist Arts News.

The items in this series are arranged chronologically.
