Fashion in Motion: Collette Dinnigan
July 2000
Fashion in Motion is a series of live catwalk events presented at the V&A. Featuring some of the greatest designers of our time, Fashion in Motion brings catwalk couture to a wider audience by modelling it against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum.
Collette Dinnigan is an Australian designer whose collections are fun, sexy and beautifully crafted. Her Winter 2000 collection draws on an eclectic range of sources: bohemian and romantic; old and new; and Latin America. The Fashion in Motion at the V&A shows this collection and her Resort 2000 collection.
Dinnigan’s work shows attention to detail and an historical perspective. Most of her clothes feature French fabrics which have been hand-embroidered in India, by men working in Bombay chosen for their high-craft skills. The cloth is then sent to Australia where it is all cut and sewn by hand and hand finished.
Collette Dinnigan began her career in fashion working for the costume department of the Australian Broadcasting Commission in Sydney, Australia. In 1990, Dinnigan set up her own fashion label. Her work was quickly acclaimed in Australia and she soon after established an international presence, selling through the department stores Barney’s in New York and Joyce in New York.
In 1995, Dinnigan began showing in, and was awarded the 1997 Louis Vuitton Business Award. She was named Australian Designer of the Year in 1998 and awarded the 1998 'Award for Excellence' by Fashion Group International.
Collette Dinnigan has opened her first European retail outlet in Chelsea, London. Her clothes are sought out by stars such as Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Jerry Hall, Cameron Diaz and Kylie Minogue.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
