Fashion in Motion: Men in Skirts
February 2002
Fashion in Motion is a series of live catwalk events presented at the V&A. Featuring some of the greatest designers of our time, Fashion in Motion brings catwalk couture to a wider audience by modelling it against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum.
Menswear is dramatically re-invented for the 21st century in this catwalk show at the V&A Fashion in Motion where men in designer skirts, dresses, kilts, sarongs, kaftans and frock coats were featured. Internationally renowned designers showed their Spring/Summer 2002 work where they reappropriated the skirt for men, a garment which until relatively recently was worn by both sexes. The skirts showcased in this event represent an alternative to conventional menswear which can be as comfortable and elegant as it is radical.
The event complemented the Men in Skirts display in Room 40 which looked at variations on the male skirt throughout history and its re-conceptualisation by leading designers. The display featured some 60 skirts and outfits and considered the male skirt within different socio-historic and cross-cultural contexts.

A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
