Fashion in Motion: Charles & Patricia Lester

August 2000

Fashion in Motion is a series of live catwalk events presented at the V&A.  Featuring some of the greatest designers of our time, Fashion in Motion brings catwalk couture to a wider audience by modelling it against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum.

Charles and Patricia Lester design simple, fluid garments in lustrous velvets, silks and devorés, hand-painted using special techniques of dye application. The unusual qualities of the fabrics used- notably their hallmark hand-pleating- allow the clothes to mould to the shape of the body. Simple designs, fluid tailoring, and the unusual qualities of the fabrics epitomise the refined style of Charles and Patricia Lester.

Their clothes are worn by celebrities including Princess Michael of Kent, Barbara Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor and have featured in opera and film productions, including 'The Wings of a Dove', as well as in the V&A’s 1997 exhibition 'The Cutting Edge: Fifty Years of British Fashion' and was one of the V&A's  Fashion in Motion series of designers in 2000.

A gift in your will

You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
