UK design for performance 2003 - 2007
Collaborators used costumes, puppets, drawings, photographs, models of stage sets and interactive digital presentations to highlight the collaborative nature of theatre design.
The selection of designs on display was chosen by the Society of British Theatre Designers in collaboration with the V&A’s Theatre and Performance curators.
Designs included work from internationally acclaimed set designers of recent years Paul Brown, Richard Hudson and Ralph Koltai, including Brown's surreal designs for La Traviata at the 25,000 seat Arena di Verona in 2004, Es Devlin's 2006 Laurence Olivier Award-winning costume designs for the RSC's production of Dog in a Manger and designs for Orestes 2.0 by recent Linbury prize winner Becs Andrews.
Inventive contemporary performance designs included Boxed by the Seven Sisters company, which took place in a series of shop windows on Oxford Street, London in 2006.
The display also explored designs for musicals such as Christopher Oram’s set for Evita at the Adelphi Theatre London, 2006 and Rick Fisher’s lighting scheme for Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London 2005 which won Best Musical at the 2005 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.
Innovative designs for outdoor and ‘found-space’ productions include Mulgrave, a promenade performance on the Yorkshire coast in 2005 by Wilson + Wilson company, and Corcadorca’s production of The Tempest performed on the pond in Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork in 2006.
Written to accompany the Collaborators exhibition.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
