Head of Buddha, Bodhisattva, 4th-5th century, probably Afghanistan, but in Gandharan style. Museum no. IM 3-1931
This gracious head has the sacred marks of the Buddha: a prominent hair knot, forehead mark and elongated earlobes, an allusion to his former princely status when he wore pendent earrings. It was once colourfully painted
