Charles Dickens: The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Edwin Drood is Dickens's last novel, and was unfinished when the author died in 1870. Only six of the planned twelve instalments were published, in monthly parts from April to September of that year. The novel was illustrated by Luke Fildes.

The manuscript was subsequently bequeathed to the Museum by John Forster (1812-1876) the author's friend and biographer. The Forster Collection also includes the manuscripts of most of Dickens's other full-length novels, plus printers' proofs, early editions, correspondence and artworks.
