Charles Dickens' manuscripts and proofs

The National Art Library at the V&A holds the original manuscripts for most of Charles Dickens' novels, from The Old Curiosity Shop (1840 – 41) to A Tale of Two Cities (1859), from Bleak House (1853) to The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1870).

The manuscripts came to the V&A (formerly the South Kensington Museum) in 1876 as part of the library of John Forster, one of Dickens' closest friends and the author of his first biography, published in two volumes in 1872 – 74. This library, in addition to the literary manuscripts, contains a wealth of letters from Dickens to Forster, some corrected proofs, the publications in which the novels first appeared, as well as first and subsequent 19th-century editions of the great novelist's works, often signed by the author to Forster.
