Best fashion moments of the 90s!

The 1990s was full of so many iconic figures and moments, but it was especially influential for fashion. Think the looks of the amazing Spice Girls, Oasis and basically anything supermodels like Naomi Cambell or Kate Moss wore! The clothes of the 90s have inspired so many of things we wear today – and many of our current trends are influenced by those original vintage looks. Here’s seven of our favourite fashion items that originated in the decade – we bet you’ll recognise them in wardrobes today!

Bucket hats

Bucket hats were a huge fashion accessory in the 1990s, but did you know they were originally worn by Irish farming and fishing communities in the early 1900s? They greatly rose to popularity in the 90s and became a streetwear staple, particularly in the hip-hop and Brit-pop scenes. They were most famously worn by mancunian heroes Oasis, and rapper Run-DMC, but they were the top choice of hat for many in that decade. And it’s no wonder, they not only look cool but they provide shade from the sun too! Win-win!

Bum bags

Before those cross body bags were so fashionable, bum-bags were all the rage. Rising to popularity in the 80s and continuing into the 90s, these belted bags were not only practical, but stylish. By the late 90s though, people had decided they were a bit too touristy and moved on – but they’ve had a vintage resurgence of late! What do you think about these love-hate bags?

Dungarees

Dungarees – also known commonly as overalls – surged to popularity during the 1990s. They were not only super comfy, but they also looked great for streetwear style. Usually made out of denim or canvas material, the clothes transitioned from workwear into fashion statements. They are still a popular style today, given that 90s baggy, oversized look remains very popular in culture.

Graphic tees

The grunge trend became hugely popular in the 1990s, fuelled by iconic bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The trend usually featured band logos, photographs or album artwork on the t-shirts, which people often wore oversized with open shirts. This trend has been a staple look ever since and graphic t-shirts are still hugely popular in fashion trends now.

Cargo pants

You’ll probably recognise cargo pants (aka trousers) as a popular trend in today’s fashion, but they actually originated as a must-have look of the decade. They became a popular fashion item in streetwear trends due to their comfy, oversized and practical style. Need a pocket to carry something around in? Don’t worry, these trousers have about 25!

Scrunchies

Scrunchies were invented in 1986 by Rommy Revson and quickly became a trend in the nineties. They were originally invented to tie up big hair without damaging it and were actually inspired by the waistband of pyjamas! During the 90s they rose to popularity – only enhanced by them being spotted in shows like ‘Friends’. They fit in perfectly with the relaxed, chilled out style of the decade.

Cycling shorts

Cycling shorts or bike shorts became highly popular during the 80s and 90s, popularised mainly by celebrities of the time like the iconic Princess Diana, who famously wore them with oversized tees and sweatshirts. Originally worn for sport, they soon became a fashion first item, not just comfort, but style too!
