For young people

These rules are not very exciting, but they are important. They are aimed at your parent or guardian and tell them how you can get the best out of Mused. Please show these rules to your parent or guardian if you want to know more about Mused before you get stuck in. 

For parents and guardians

These terms and conditions explain how Mused on vam.ac.uk/mused should be used. Please review these terms before allowing your child to access Mused and explain to them how these terms work when they visit the site. 

About us

The Mused site is operated by The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance.

The V&A reports to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and it is a charity exempt from registration under the Charities Act of 2011. It is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Prime Minister.

Child protection

We are committed to making sure Mused is a fun and safe place online for young people and children to use. 

You should make sure your child understands these terms. You are responsible for your child’s usage of the site, whether supervised or unsupervised.

About Mused

Mused contains quizzes, articles, videos and other content about the world of art and design, fashion, music, gaming, shows and films for young people to view, play and enjoy. We make sure any content we upload and publish, as well as any features on the website are safe for a young audience and built according to requirements and recommendations in the ICO’s children’s code

Personal information

We do not require any personal information (for example, names, email address or home address) from any of our users or their parents/guardians. However our users may choose to send us personal data about themselves or their parent/guardian, for example if they contact us with a query on hello@vam.ac.uk

Using content from Mused

Content on Mused is published for your child’s enjoyment. Your child may freely access and store the majority of this content for personal or private use. Please ask your child to respect the following Terms of Use which set out the use they can make of Mused.

Please note that the intellectual property rights in all ‘Content’, being material to be found on Mused  (including images, editorial or descriptive text, footage or any other media), is owned by the V&A and possible other copyright owners as specified wherever possible.

‘V&A Owned Content’ in which the V&A owns copyright (or related rights) may be used free of charge for non-commercial purposes.

The V&A considers non-commercial use to be any use that is not intended for or directed towards commercial advantage of monetary compensation. The following are examples of non-commercial use of Content which is permitted, except where other terms expressly apply:

• Using V&A Owned Content and works where copyright has expired for non-commercial research, private study, criticism and review, or for the purpose of teaching and instruction within an educational establishment.

• Using limited amounts of copyright material (V&A and other creators) without permission for the purpose of parody, caricature and pastiche.

• Downloading V&A copyright audiovisual Content for non-commercial offline listening or viewing.

• Downloading and printing of V&A copyright learning Content for non-commercial educational use.

• Embedding links to V&A audiovisual Content for non-commercial use, providing no Third Party Content rights are infringed (please below).

• Any use covered by the V&A’s free online Explore the Collections resource.

For all uses, a sufficient acknowledgment must be made to the copyright holder of work.

Nothing in these terms restricts your child’s right to use Content where the use is covered by a copyright exception under the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. It is your responsibility to make sure your child complies with the copyright exceptions before using in-copyright Content.

Crediting and use of V&A logo

For any V&A Owned Content, the following copyright credit line must be displayed if the Content is used outside of Mused: © Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Third party content

The V&A has made reasonable efforts to identify any Content in which a third party owns copyright (“Third Party Content”), and to secure permission for its use only by the V&A . Therefore, it is your responsibility to secure any permission or consent required for your child’s own use of such Third Party Content outside of Mused.

If you are not sure who owns the copyright in any Content your child wishes to use, please contact: copyrightenquiries@vam.ac.uk.

Copyright statement

One of the V&A’s aims is to provide access to its collections and services for diverse audiences, now and in the future. The V&A makes reasonable efforts to protect its own intellectual property rights and the rights of others. If you believe that the use of Content (including images, editorial or descriptive text, footage or any other media) found on Mused infringes yours, your child’s or someone else’s rights, please contact us, providing the information requested below:

• Your contact details

• Nature of the complaint

• V&A museum number (where applicable)

• The full web address of where you found the material

• Proof that you/they are the rights holder

This Copyright Statement does not obligate the V&A to respond to all complaints or other correspondence received about alleged unauthorised use of third party rights. However, the V&A will respond to and take any action it considers necessary in respect of all genuine and evidenced complaints or other correspondence received about all such alleged unauthorised use of third party rights.

Liability

To the extent permitted by law, the V&A excludes all conditions, warranties, representations or other terms which may apply to Mused or any Content, whether express or implied. We will not be liable to any user for any loss or damage, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, even if foreseeable, arising under or in connection with your use of, or inability to use Mused, PROVIDED THAT nothing in these Terms of Use shall restrict or exclude any liability that the V&A has to any party which cannot be excluded by law.

The V&A assumes no responsibility for the content of websites linked to or from Mused. Such links should not be interpreted as endorsement by the V&A of those linked websites and the V&A shall not be liable for any loss or damage that may arise from your or your child’s use of them.

Law and jurisdiction

These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of England and Wales and the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
