The Castlereagh inkstand
The gold Castlereagh inkstand is a magnificent memorial to diplomacy in the age of Napoleon. As a monument to the tumultuous days that culminated in the defeat of Napoleon and the subsequent rebuilding of Europe, the inkstand ranks with the great silver presentations made to Wellington and his commanders.

The Word & Image department (WID) is responsible for the Museum’s collections of prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, designs, computer art, books and archives, including 8 of the V&A’s 18 national collections. WID also leads on both the V&A and RIBA Architecture Partnership and the annual V&A Illustration Awards.
