The Sims Y2K: Horrible things we did in the 00s

The Sims by EA Games has come a long way from it’s initial 2000 release. Sims 4 provides highly intuitive Create-A-Sim (CAS) mechanics, streamlined Build Mode, smooth multitasking, and inclusive identity options. Sims 1 was the OG game and older players remember it fondly. We asked colleagues who played The Sims during Y2K, what horrible thing they sometimes subjected their Sim to? Here’s what they did…

Removing the pool ladder…

A still from Sims 1 showing a Sim swimming in the pool with a thought bubble of the pool stairs as they have been removed. There is a grey patio surrounding the square pool.

“I’d get the Sim in the pool ready for a relaxing swim, then remove the stairs and watch them panic. Feel a bit bad about that now…”

Trash the mansion!

A still from Sims 1 showing a pool, mansion and manicured gardens in various shades of terracotta, blue, beige and green.

“I’d absolutely wreck my mansions. I’d get the good job, save all the money, buy this massive mansion then totally trash it. Leave rubbish everywhere, get flies, live like an absolute pig. I am actually a really clean person in real life!”

I ain’t afraid of no ghost!

A still from The Sims 1 showing a garden with three people stood in it, one of which is a ghost with blue skin and hair. The other two people are wearing a white shirt and shorts and a red dress. There are fountains and flowers and green grass around them.

“I’d get a cemetery going in my back garden and have the current residents haunted by the ghost of previous ones. They’d scream their heads off. I found this very funny. Except the music that played when a ghost appeared – that was actually pretty scary.”

Evil clone!

A still from Sims 1 showing a party scene in a lounge with two Sims talking and another watching from across the room. There is green and yellow seating in the middle and a big orange lamp in the corner.

“I’d get my Sim playing with the chemistry set and there was a way you could make them make a clone of themselves – this would be absolute chaos. They’d ruin your relationships and basically make your life a living hell. My Sim would just sit and eat pizza watching all this happen.”

Dance till you die!

A still from Sims 1 showing Sims on a lit up, multicoloured dancefloor with a cage and seating around them.

“You could make your Sim literally dance until they died. That was pretty horrible.”

Burn baby burn!

A still from The Sims showing Sims around a giant fire with speech bubbles above them with fire symbols.

“I loved having parties and setting off fireworks to entertain my guests – problem is, I’d knowingly set off too many and start a massive fire. Ooops.”
