Stranger Things is no stranger (ho ho ho) to some truly awesome retro 1980s outfits. Costume designer Amy Parris really captured the era throughout the series. We have picked some of our favourite looks – from sailor suits to trucker hats, we’ve got it covered. Which character’s outfit inspires you the most?
Eleven’s playsuit
In Season 3, Episode 2 “Mallrats”, Max takes Eleven shopping at the Starcourt Mall to revamp her wardrobe. Eleven buys a colourful geometric playsuit, typical of the 1980s fashion of the time, but it is more than just a fun outfit, it’s a significant symbol of her character’s growth and exploration of identity. Costume designer Amy Parris wanted to show Eleven’s development and self-discovery journey. This jumpsuit saw many copycats sold across shops after this episode aired!
Robin’s Scoops Ahoy sailor outfit
Robin Buckley’s ice cream outfit in Season 3 quickly became a fan favourite. Amy Parris designed this sailor inspired red white and blue outfit that perfectly captures the light-hearted novelty vibe of the 1980s and quirky rebellious nature of Robin’s character. This outfit has been replicated for many Halloween costumes since!
Hopper’s tropical shirt
Amy Parris chose this shirt for Hopper to show his less serious side. Up until Season 3, we’d only really seen Hopper wear his police uniform or dull, drab clothing. This bright tropical shirt is way more relaxed for the summer of 1985. How fabulous he looked in it! We bet you can find one and rock it!
Max and Eleven’s raincoats
Max and Eleven need to save Billy at the Starcourt Mall in Season 3, and what better outfits to wear in the pouring rain than these incredible brightly coloured 1980s raincoats. Raincoats have had quite the journey from pure utilitarian wear for fishermen and lighthouse keepers to being the ultimate mix of style and practicality. Do you own one?
Will, Lucas, Dustin and Max
Look at this retro resplendence! Costume designer Amy Parris drew inspiration from a variety of 1980s sources, including films, magazines and personal photographs, to create authentic and individual looks for each character. From Dustin’s fun t-shirts and trucker hats, to Mike’s striped polos and Lucas’s colourful bandanas, each outfit not only fits the period but also enhances the characters’ distinct personalities and backgrounds.
Dustin’s hat
Dustin’s hat is one of the most recognisable pieces of the show’s wardrobe, becoming a signature part of his character’s look. The trucker hat, typically featuring a colourful front panel and a mesh back, perfectly captures the 1980s aesthetic and Dustin’s silly, adventurous personality. Costume designer Amy Parris chose this style to reflect Dustin’s quirky and lovable nature, as well as to pay homage to the era’s popular fashion trends.
Eddie’s Hellfire t-shirt
Eddie Munson, in Season 4, sports the iconic Hellfire Club t-shirt, which quickly sold out in shops when replicated after the show. This black and white t-shirt, emblazoned with a demonic logo, signifies Eddie’s role as the charismatic leader of the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High School’s Dungeons & Dragons group. Costume designer Amy Parris designed the shirt to reflect the rebellious and imaginative spirit of the 1980s metal scene, aligning perfectly with Eddie’s edgy, outsider persona. We love you Eddie!
