Daytrippers: Klara Sormark

Our collaboration with Local Heroes celebrates and supports Scottish designers. In this series, you'll meet the designers behind these collectable products.

Daytrippers! showcases the work of six designers, each commissioned to create contemporary, limited-edition souvenirs in celebration of the ‘year of the daytripper’. On offer are beautifully designed wildflower seed boxes and beach towels, displayed on specially customised Christiana bikes.

Klara Sormark is a Swedish illustrator based in Edinburgh and she has illustrated our limited edition 'Big Bee Seaside' mix, sourced from Scotia Seeds that brings bees and other pollinators to your garden: containing Wild Carrot, Vipers Bugloss, Clustered Bellflower and Mullein.

Klara is mainly inspired by animals and nature, and loves to use a lot of colour in her work and often refers back to illustrated books she used to read when she was younger, "I’ve really enjoyed sketching, researching and drawing the seed packaging, and especially the seed mix I chose to illustrate. The selection of 4 seeds are all wildflowers that my late grandmother used to grow and care for in her seaside garden, in the south of Sweden. I’ve spent every summer there since the day I was born so that made me feel even more connected to this project which was an added bonus."

"I was over the moon when contacted about the Daytrippers project, the brief was very summery and positive and it’s been a joy to work on! I love the fact that the souvenirs are something that V&A Dundee visitors can take home with them and use for future outings or garden days, and be reminded of the day they visited the museum."

Klara has a degree in Fashion Design but illustration is her passion and has been drawing for as long as she can remember, " in 2020 I started my illustration business and now work mostly digitally, using Procreate for iPad. I try and vary my techniques from time to time, and sometimes work with ink on paper or lino printing, especially if I’m developing an idea or sketch, especially if I’m developing an idea"

Local Heroes, founded by design curator and exhibition maker Dr Stacey Hunter, is a curatorial studio that connects audiences with contemporary Scottish design and craft.
