Prosthetics Meets Eyewear

Eyewear has become a natural statement of fashion, culture and individual identity.

With the proliferation of optical boutiques and designer glasses, we seldom think of glasses as a medical appliance any more, yet this was exactly how they were defined by the National Health Service just a few decades ago.

It’s not only the design of glasses, but also the design of the service through which they are offered that has changed our relationship with them. What could we learn about alternative approaches to prosthetics by comparing opticians and limb fitting centres? Could this help to give people with limb difference and amputees a greater sense of ownership over their own prostheses?

Join us for this panel discussion with Graham Pullin (Co-Curator of Hands of X: Design Meets Disability) and leading figures in the eyewear industry: Tom Broughton (Founder of Cubitts) and Lawrence Jenkin (Designer at Anglo-American Optical).

Our Lunchtime Talks include a range of speakers unearthing little-known stories of Scottish design with international impact. Feel free to bring your lunch, or a coffee from the café.
