Last chance to see V&A Dundee’s inaugural show
24 Jan 2018
There is just one month remaining to see V&A Dundee’s inaugural show Ocean Liners: Speed and Style.
The exhibition, which brings together more than 250 objects from public and private collections around the world, officially closes on 24 February.
Re-imagining the golden age of ocean travel, it showcases remarkable works including paintings, sculptures, ship and engine models, wall panels, furniture, fashion, textiles, photographs, posters and film.
Described as “stunning” (The Scotsman) and “a glimpse into another world” (The List), Ocean Liners: Speed and Style is the first major V&A show to be exhibited in Scotland.
Sophie McKinlay, Director of Programme at V&A Dundee, said: “This extraordinary exhibition gives visitors a sense of life on board an ocean liner and also celebrates Scotland’s pioneering design and engineering heritage making it a fitting first exhibition for V&A Dundee.
“This really is the last chance to see this truly unique show as Dundee is the final stop on its journey, so I would encourage anyone who hasn’t yet visited to do so before it closes in a month’s time.”
Organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, and supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and investment managers Baillie Gifford, exhibition highlights include:
- A large-scale golden lacquer panel from the first-class smoking room on the Normandie, designed by Jean Dunand
- ‘The Riveters’, part of Stanley Spencer’s epic series Shipbuilding on the Clyde commissioned by the British Government to record industries involved in World War Two
- Personalised luggage previously belonging to the Duke of Windsor, from the exclusive Maison Goyard
- A diamond and pearl tiara by Cartier, previously owned by Lady Marguerite Allan, and saved from the Lusitania
- The largest remaining fragment from the Titanic which was found floating on the surface of the Atlantic.
The next major exhibition at V&A Dundee is Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt, which will run from 20 April to 8 September 2019. The spectacular V&A show will focus on videogames designed and developed since the mid-2000s when major technological advancements transformed the way games are designed, discussed and played.
