David Ramsay, the King’s Chief Clockmaker

Find out more about the history of early clock-making

A lecture brought to you and organised by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland as part of its autumn 2019 – summer 2020 event programme, in collaboration with V&A Dundee.

Exploring exquisitely decorated timepieces made with the cutting-edge technology of the time, this lecture will be given by Dr Tacye Phillipson (Science Curator, National Museums Scotland) and Dr John C. Taylor OBE (horologist and inventor).

Dr Taylor will uncover the innovation of Scottish watchmaker David Ramsay (c1585-1660), Chief Clockmaker to King James I and first master of the Worshipful Clockmakers Company London. Dr Phillipson will provide an overview of the variety and development of clockwork during the 17th century.

The lecture will be followed by a reception providing a great opportunity to mingle, meet the speakers, Society staff and Fellows and see more of the museum.
