About the performance

The DSO have been providing the best in classical music for Dundee audiences since its inception in 1896. Under the baton of conductor Robert Dick, the programme they will present on June 13th is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Mozart’s Symphony number 40 and Beethoven’s fourth symphony are gems in the crown of classical music, and having two classics in such a classic venue is something for everyone to savour. Nineteen years separate the premiers of these symphonies – Mozart’s in 1788, Beethoven’s in 1807 – and while the latter has been performed by the DSO before, this will be the orchestra’s first performance of the Mozart masterpiece.

It is one of the “big three”, the others being symphonies 39 and 41, and while many say the composer never heard it performed, the fact that he added clarinets and re-scored the flutes and oboes suggests that he did and wasn’t 100% satisfied. This re-visited version is the version the DSO will be performing. One other significant point to this performance is that this year is the 270th anniversary of Mozart’s birth.

Beethoven’s Fourth is, perhaps, unfairly overshadowed by the more-popular and more-performed third and fifth symphonies, but it stands out in its own right as a classic. The original manuscript is in the care of the Berlin State Library and can be seen online.

Each symphony lasts just over 30 minutes, but there’s enough marvellous music in both to satisfy even the most demanding listener.
