Haçienda Landscapes: In Conversation with Ben Kelly

Preview an eclectic photographic retrospective of the iconic Manchester club.

Join us for a conversation between Ben Kelly, the designer of one of Manchester’s most iconic nightclubs The Haçienda, currently featuring in Night Fever. Ben will be joined by photographer and artist Eugene Schlumberger and Ross Hunter of Graven Images. They’ll discuss – and give you an exclusive preview of – the upcoming new book, Haçienda Landscapes, ahead of its release this winter, and The Haçienda’s 40th anniversary in 2022.

Part photobook, part visual history, Haçienda Landscapes is a collaboration with photographer Eugene Schlumberger and reflects upon the club’s enduring design aesthetic via photography of the industrial landscapes of the North, the graphic language of the everyday, and items selected from Kelly’s own archives – much of which has never been published before.

Ben Kelly is one of the UK’s most influential designers, best known for his interior design of the legendary nightclub, The Haçienda in Manchester. His practice has produced influential work for 180 The Strand, Virgil Abloh, The Sex Pistols, The V&A, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, Factory Records, 4AD, The Science Museum, The Design Council, The Natural History Museum, Gymbox and BIMM.

Eugene Schlumberger is a north-east-England based photographer and artist, looking predominantly at the role of colour in memory and working in response to music.

Ross Hunter is one of the founding directors of the Glasgow-based design studio Graven. From 1986 they have worked across interior and graphic design projects in Scotland and internationally. Graven’s early work included the branding of The Tunnel, interiors for Sub Club and Room at the Top, as well as other fun stuff in the ‘nineties. Today, Graven is mostly focussed on design in workplace, hospitality, experiential and strategic areas of design and happy to acknowledge that much of what they learned about design was in bars and clubs.
