Healing Through Craft
Tuesday 2 September – Tuesday 30 September
Healing Through Craft showcases the outcomes of workshops developed over the past two years by Dundee Community Craft CIC in collaboration with local organisations and community groups. Exploring how jewellery design and craftsmanship can be a transformative tool to empower people in recovery.
Taking inspiration from jeweller Jack Cunningham’s work in our Scottish Design Galleries, workshop participants were supported to express personal stories and emotions experienced on their recovery journey. The sessions were hosted in familiar venues by artists, supported by researchers and specialist recovery services. Each setting offered a unique atmosphere, allowing participants to engage on their own terms and to focus on the process over the outcome. Based on the theme of the garden, participants explored symbols, materials, and forms that express hopes for the future, collective healing and growth in Dundee.
Dundee Community Craft CIC provides workshops, training and employment opportunities to communities in the city adversely affected by poverty, complex trauma, and substance use, delivered by people with similar lived experiences. Their engagement and support model is adaptable and has contributed to academic research, offering a positive example for integrating creativity into health and social care practice.
Just Bee Productions, Dundee Women’s Hub, Dundee Recovery Network, the Bella Centre, and Whitfield's Resolve and Evolve groups area all featured.
