Explore the future of our high streets

Streets Ahead is a national design challenge that invites young people to imagine what Scotland’s high streets could become. As the next generation of designers, citizens, and users of these spaces, their insight is vital. By involving young people directly in the planning and redesign process, Streets Ahead not only ensures their voices are heard - it empowers them to take pride in shaping the communities they live in.

Through the programme, young people explore urban planning, architecture, and design, building the skills and confidence to influence real world change. Sixty three schools from across Scotland took part, with finalists attending a hands-on “Design Jam” where they developed and prototyped their ideas alongside professional designers.

This display presents the finalists’ visionary prototypes - fresh perspectives on what our high streets could become.

Streets Ahead is led by V&A Dundee’s Schools Development Officer, a unique position made possible through a Dundee City Council secondment. The project is proudly supported by the NCR Foundation, who are also providing the winning team from Tarbert Academy with an exclusive work experience opportunity at NCR Atleos in Dundee.

On now until Sunday 25 October 2026

Please note: Streets Ahead will not be on display on 24 to 26 July.
