Schools Design Challenge

How can we reduce loneliness and isolation in schools?

Visit this exhibition to explore our Schools Design Challenge 2019/20 in which secondary pupils used design to tackle real-life issues.

Based on the 2018 Scottish Govt Strategy ‘A Connected Scotland’, the challenge was set back in September 2019 and asked pupils 'How can we reduce loneliness and isolation in schools?'

Using design as a tool for social change, pupils were encouraged to work together to find solutions that address the issues directly affecting them. They had to imagine an idea, develop it with a designer and work with a filmmaker to share it.

The challenge was open to all S1/S2pupils in Dundee, Perth & Kinross, Angus and Highland local authority areas. 600 pupils submitted ideas and our judging panel had the difficult task of selecting just 17 teams to attend the Design Jam.

This all-day event saw each team work creatively with a professional designer, use the design process and a range of materials to develop their idea and create a prototype. Pupils were also filmed chatting about their idea, how they came up with it and what it was like working with a designer. At the end of the Design Jam, each team presented to the group, discussing their process, solutions and designs they created.

We are delighted to share this vibrant and dynamic showcase of the design process and creative problem solving from our young designers of the future.
