Join RIAS and Stallan-Brand to explore Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen, winner of the RIAS Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award 2025. The project was recognised for its sensitive transformation of a long-neglected Victorian garden into a safe, inclusive and fully accessible public space.

Hear from Rowan Morrice as he discusses the design approach, key challenges and wider impact of this significant civic project.

About the speaker

Rowan Morrice is a Conservation Accredited Senior Architect who has been with Stallan-Brand since 2018. Rowan grew up in Dundee and studied in Aberdeen before moving to pursue his career at London practices Nex and FCBS.

Prior to working on Union Terrace Gardens, he delivered other high-profile and multi-award-winning projects, notably the Royal Air Force Museum Centenary Project in London, and the Royal Wharf Pier for the Thames Clippers in London, both at Nex. More recently at Stallan Brand, he has designed and delivered the new 1400 pupil Peebles High School – a game-changing school design that will be formally opened this summer.

In all his projects, Rowan takes a user-centric approach to design, with the aim of providing joyful and uplifting environments.
