Screening: The Films of Byker
Saturday 19 October - Sunday 20 October
Drop-in to exclusive screenings of the films documenting Konttinen’s iconic Byker photography series
Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s Byker photography series captures Newcastle’s working-class communities during the East End’s redevelopment in the 1970s & 80s. Recognized by UNESCO for its ‘outstanding national value,’ the series is accompanied by films expanding on the stories behind those images.
Join us for these special weekend screenings of:
Byker (1983)
A partly dramatised documentary built around Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s photographs of the Newcastle terraced community, demolished to make way for the Byker Wall.
Today I’m With You (2010)
Revisiting Byker decades later, this film explores the lives of a new generation of residents, focusing on their stories and the changing landscape of the neighbourhood.
Still Here (2018)
Konttinen returns to Byker to search for the people and communities in her photographs, including the Girl on a Spacehopper (as seen in Photo City).
