A summer of drawing, mythical beasts and rebellious rabbits

September 5, 2014

This August over 7,500 people took part in our families summer holiday programme. For The Imagination Station activity we took inspiration from Trajan’s Column in the Cast Courts and asked families to record their journey around the museum in an activity designed by Liam O’Connor, Exhibition Road Drawing Resident. We had some wonderful drawings and it was fascinating to see which objects/ pieces of art and design children were interested in (there were a lot of lions and tigers!).

For our annual Make-it Clay sessions we worked with Nao Matsunaga, Ceramicist in Residence on a Mythical Beasts workshop. Children went into the ceramics galleries and used all the fabulous images of beasts to create their own new unique mythical creatures in clay. We also had a fantastic partnership with Roger Stirk Harbour and Partners during August where architects from their practice came to the V&A as part of our Drop in Design programme and ran architectural drawing workshops.

Last but not least, we had a great Pop up Performance offer every Saturday with performances such as Peter Rabbit and Friends and Curious Crafts. August also saw the culmination of the ‘Treasure’ community project, working with the Westway Development Trust and Dante or Die Theatre Company with a family performance in the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries.

Here are some quotes from families:

‘ I really liked the Imagination Station because I enjoyed doing art and trying out new pencils.’

‘I thought that the drawing was really fun. The huge column was awesome’

‘My family really enjoyed this project. Very simple idea but so engaging. Thank you’

‘We enjoyed today’s activity. It helped us to look closely at the exhibits’

Thank you to everyone who came along and also to all the families team who worked so hard to make it such a successful summer.
