‘Meet the Librarians’ at the National Art Library

August 22, 2023

Please note that due to illness, the date of the session has changed to October 24th.

Whether you have been a regular reader at the National Art Library for many years, or have just signed up for a readers card with us, you may sometimes think “I wonder why they do that?”, “I wish they realised the impact of…”, or importantly “it would be so much better if…”.

We give opportunities for feedback via our online comments and enquiries service, which go directly through to the librarian in charge of the subject of your enquiry or comment. And of course, we have lots of interesting chats with our readers at the library service desks! But sometimes there is no substitute for a face-to-face meeting with those who directly influence the services you receive.

This Autumn, we are going to hold a monthly ‘meet the librarians’ session. We will begin on Tuesday 24th of October at 10.00 and will be available for an hour before the Library opens. The Chief Librarian, Richard Espley, will be there along with other Senior Librarians responsible for onsite and online services, collection development and the care, storage, and delivery of the Library’s collection. It’s a pilot, but if it turns out to be successful and worthwhile for our readers, then we will keep it going. Future sessions may be onsite or online and will be advertised here.

So if you have a comment, suggestion or would just like to hear a bit more about what happens behind the scenes then please do drop in – no appointment necessary. It would be great to meet you!

A splendid idea the sessions. How do the librarians know which books need the most care right away in a huge archive.

Question: Are there any plans afoot to open up branches of the Library elsewhere where the V&A has a presence? I’m thinking in particular of Dundee!

I really enjoyed ‘meet the librarians’ session today (24 Oct 2023). It was very friendly, informative and interesting session.

I have been a member since September 2022 and visited NAL 28 times reading over 100 books. I teach Japanese and Japanese culture for my job and reading books on Japanese art (including Kimono) really helps me to improve my lessons.

Thank you very much for holding today`s session. I am looking forward to attending at the next session.
