Pop Up Stories

February 16, 2013

This year we introduced new Art & Design workshops for Primary Schools. One of those sessions, Pop Up Stories, is led by Sarah Bridgland , a graphic artist and former student from the Royal College of Art, who works in 3D collage. We worked with Sarah to develop a session which would allow pupils to explore stories hidden in the V&A’s collections and get lost in a world of storytelling by creating their own 3D pop ups.

Within the session, pupils explore star objects in the South Asia gallery; from Tipu’s Tiger wrestling a British soldier to miniature paintings of court life and 18th Century Indian costume. The session encourages the pupils to bring to life the stories of these objects though the studio activity with Sarah.

After searching for inspiration, Sarah takes the pupils through a step by step process to create their own pop up story using their favourite characters from the galleries. Pupils are shown some of the graphic techniques that Sarah uses in her own work to construct their 3D paper story. The activity is also designed to encourage literacy skills. At the end of each session the pupils tell each other their stories and Sarah helps them to attach each individual story together to form a group pop up book which they can take back to school.
