On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... A cloth-bound, illustrated copy of our favourite Christmas carol!

To mark the festive season, we worked with the illustrator, Liz Catchpole, who selected twelve William Morris patterns in our collection, adding partridges, turtle doves, French hens (can you guess what else?) to create this very V&A book.

Learn the words to this 18th-century carol (with beautiful visual cues), or if you're feeling creative then grab some tracing paper and create your own festive motifs with Morris and Catchpole's aid.

About the designer
William Morris

William Morris

Textile designer, writer and social pioneer, William Morris and his work have long been associated with the V&A. In 1865, his company was commissioned to design the West Dining Room at the museum, which features early examples of a number of the organic patterns that would make his name. Born in Walthamstow in 1836, Morris was captivated by nature from childhood, spending much of his time exploring Epping Forest and the surrounding countryside. These themes informed much of his textile design, and his mastery of pattern ensured an enduring appeal.
