Epic in scope, The Music is Black explores the sound and identity of the African diaspora as shaped by imperialism and colonialism from the 1400s, and surveys the uniquely Black British musical genres emerging between 1900 and 1970. Subsequent influential imports, rap and ragga, are discussed, with dedicated sections on Lovers Rock, Brit Funk, 2 Tone, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Trip Hop, UK Garage and Grime.
Each section includes artist interviews, with histories from Carroll Thompson, Neville Staple, Kenny Wellington, Bluey Maunick, Fabio & Grooverider, Morcheeba, Megaman, DJ Target and Slimzee.
