Recalling the glamour of a bygone age, this woodcut decoration depicts the Midnight Sun as seen in the ballet of the same name.

 

Designed by Vera Willoughby, the decoration is based on a range of hand-painted plywood souvenirs sold at CW Beaumont on Charing Cross Road in the early 20th century, reflecting the popularity of the Diaghilev Ballets Russes. Beaumont’s delightful original decorations are now held in the V&A archive.
